ASSIGNMENT #3: Global Cooling?

Class,The following is an article that you are to read and comment upon. This article is from Newsweek and was published in 1975. It is not meant to be mocking, nor a joke. It was based upon the scientific research of that time that related to climate change.

Assignment: After you have read the complete article, write a minimum of five sentences that relate to your feelings about this article. Within your response, make sure you address the following three questions.
  1. What might have been the effects for us today if we had started to try to prevent 'global cooling' back then?
  2. Does this new knowledge make you doubt the validity of the current scientific research and beliefs? Explain your answer.
  3. Since there are natural up's and down's, do we have an inherant right as humans to attempt to stop them so that we are more comfortable?

I think that if we tried to prevent global cooling, we would’ve set the world up for an even worse problem of global warming. Melting the ice caps? That is exactly what we don’t want right now. I believe that our scientific research is much more accurate than the research done when this article was published. I don’t believe that humans should alter natural cycles in order to increase comfort. However, the level of global warming that is occurring is not a natural cycle, and we should do something to stop it.
